The Serbian Customs Administration announced today that on July 21, during a thorough inspection, which they carried out late in the evening in the vicinity of Vršac, customs officers prevented an attempt to smuggle almost two million cigarettes.
Cigarettes were discovered in the "Iveco Eurostar" truck, which was stopped by customs officials during an emergency control across the street from the OMV pump in Vršac, Beta agency reports.
Then the driver explained to the customs officials that he was going from Velika Plana, and that he was transporting linoleum from Serbia to Belarus.
Immediately after that, the customs officials began a detailed inspection and during the inspection of the exterior of the trailer, they saw that the cable behind the driver's cabin had been cut and subsequently glued.
Among the total of 1.864.800 cigarettes detected, the most were the brand "marble", almost 1.500.000 without excise stamps, followed by "monte" 150.000 with excise stamps of the Republic of Montenegro, "city" 140.000 and 95.000 "pall mall" cigarettes with excise stamps Republic of Macedonia.
Misdemeanor proceedings were initiated against the driver, a 52-year-old Serbian citizen, while the cigarettes, as well as the vehicle, were temporarily detained, it was stated in the announcement.
