Prime Minister Ana Brnabić said tonight that the arrest of the criminal group around Veljko Belivuk is the "biggest blow" to organized crime in Serbia since 2003 and Operation Saber.
She said that today's arrest is "just the beginning" and that there are other cities, such as Subotica, Vranje or Valjevo, where it is necessary to deal with organized crime.
"We announced that along with the fight against the coronavirus epidemic, the fight against the mafia will be one of the priorities of this government in the first 100 days. This is where we have achieved the most, because this is the biggest blow to organized crime since Operation Saber, which was instigated by the assassination of the Prime Minister (Zoran Djindjic )", said the Prime Minister for Radio Television of Serbia (RTS).
Today's action was "motivated by the desire to eradicate organized crime, no matter how dangerous it is for the people involved in it", she pointed out.
She stated that the arrest of the Belivuk group was not calculated to coincide with today's celebration of the first 100 days of her government's work.
"The work of the police, the Security and Information Agency, and the Prosecutor's Office for Organized Crime has been going on for months, and when the expert services judged that it was time, an arrest was made," said the Prime Minister.
She assessed that the arrested criminal group was "equally dangerous and organized" as the "Zemun clan" and in some aspects even more dangerous.
"The crimes they committed, such as murders or kidnappings, are unimaginable, and yet it is difficult to find evidence," said the Prime Minister of Serbia.
