Prime Minister of North Macedonia and SDSM leader Zorana Zaev announced this evening that on Tuesday he will make official his withdrawal from the leadership of the largest party in the ruling coalition, where he has been since 2013.
Zaev announced this after a meeting with the president of the smaller opposition Albanian party Alternative, Afrim Gashi, where they lied to the parliamentary majority about the party's possible entry, but no agreement was reached.
The SDSM leader said that he will ask the organs and bodies of the party to convene the Executive and Central Committee for Tuesday so that his resignation as party president can be confirmed and the procedure for electing a new SDSM president can begin immediately.
Zaev said that the new president of the SDSM should also be the future mandate for the composition of the government of North Macedonia and pointed out that he will stick to the public announcement and that he will resign as prime minister as soon as the parliamentary majority is secured.
"The word is the word and I will be happy to receive something like this from other politicians. If it succeeds in the coming period, and I believe it can, that the SDSM has an elected president, who should be the future mandate holder, that is, to propose a government. When you have a new mandate, you should also have a new government, not a reconstructed one," said Zaev.
According to him, if the Constitution is followed, in the event that he officially resigns from the post of Prime Minister, it will not be possible to elect a new mandate and a new government by December 14, so it is logical that SDSM uses this period to elect its president. .
The leaders of SDSM and Alternative, Zaev and Gashi, announced after today's first meeting that the talks on possible cooperation between the two parties will continue, and Gashi said that he expects Zaev's successor in the party to extend the talks, as well as that a new mandate is acceptable to him and a completely new government.
On October 31, Zaev announced that he was resigning from both positions due to defeat in the local elections, but on November 9, the authorities of his party decided to postpone the resignation of both positions indefinitely in order to stabilize the party, the country to continue its European path and not the opportunity to start negotiations with the EU in December will be missed.
