Zoran Zaev resigned as Prime Minister of North Macedonia.
In a report to the Parliament and President Talat Xhaferi, Zaev wrote that he does not intend to verbally explain his resignation.
Zaev announced his resignation immediately after his defeat in the second round of local elections, after he had previously pledged to be prime minister in the race for mayor of the City of Skopje.
After losing Skopje, as well as most municipalities, Zaev said he would resign, which he postponed several times, with the explanation that he was waiting for the date of negotiations with the EU.
After it became certain that Bulgaria would not relent and allow a date for Macedonia, Zaev decided to resign immediately after the annual address of President Steve Pendarovski to the Parliament.
According to a document published by TV24, Zaev stated what he achieved with Greece when it changed its name and the country became a member of NATO.
He wrote that he had achieved lasting peace, security and economic prosperity for the people.
He adds that time will tell if his decision is consistent with his commitment to the responsibility of making difficult decisions.
The successor of Zaev should be the new SDSM leader Dimitar Kovačevski.
