The Kosovo police are strengthening their capacities at the Brnjak crossing in the north, Serbia calls it a provocation

On February 26, the Kosovo Police "sent logistics equipment and containers, which will serve the border police," to the Brnjak border crossing in the north of the country, where the majority Serbian population lives. In the announcement, it is noted that the Kosovo Police works exclusively in the interest of the safety of citizens and the creation of a safe environment.

"The Kosovo police, based on their duties and legal powers, always undertakes the necessary police actions to ensure and maintain public order and security at the national level," the statement concludes, adding that the actions are carried out through different police units, and in order to create better working conditions and to increase logistics capacities.

After Russia invaded Ukraine, Kosovo President Vjosa Osmani and Prime Minister Aljbin Kurti said they had taken additional security measures, but did not specify which ones.

They mostly talked about meetings with representatives of domestic and international security institutions. A meeting of the Council for the National Security of Kosovo was held on February 23, but no conclusions were presented to the public.

On the other hand, the Office for Kosovo of the Government of Serbia announced that "the latest police action in the north of Kosovo is contrary to the valid agreements", with the conclusion that its only goal is dangerous provocation and destabilization of the situation on the ground.

The announcement states that the Kosovo police brought heavy machinery and personnel to 80 meters from the Brnjak crossing under "the pretext of strengthening the police station at the crossing".

"Such unilateral and irresponsible actions by Pristina have only one goal, and that is to provoke a new destabilization of the situation on the ground in a very sensitive security moment that the whole world is facing with the incursions of Kurti's forces in the north of the province and to provoke the Serbs to an disproportionate reaction, which is a scenario which Pristina desires", the office for Kosovo states, calling on Pristina "not to challenge and provoke Belgrade and the Serbs in Kosovo and not to threaten peace and security by violating the agreement.

Last September, two border crossings in the north of Kosovo were blocked by local Serbs for two weeks due to the decision of the Government of Kosovo to introduce reciprocal measures regarding license plates. Then Kosovo and Serbia found a temporary solution through the European Union, i.e. that the state symbols on the license plates are stuck with white stickers until a final solution is reached.

Kosovo and Serbia have been in dialogue for more than ten years on the normalization of relations between the two sides.
