Opposition protesters clashed with police outside the office of Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama, after tens of thousands gathered to protest corruption, growing poverty and the growing number of people leaving the country.
After three hours of peaceful protest, the demonstrators broke through the police cordon around the government building, after which they threw red and black paint at it, reports Reuters.
The police arrested one protester.
Some lit candles in memory of two men who, according to the opposition, died while in police custody.
"Just like 32 years ago, the world sees us as people who come in small boats," said the leader of the opposition Democratic Party, Sali Berisha, referring to the growing number of Albanians arriving in Britain.
British ministers previously said that Albanians are behind the wave of migrants crossing the English Channel, and that some of them are involved in organized crime.
Sali Berisha, who was previously both president and prime minister, was banned from entering the United States in 2021 due to alleged corruption.
Berisha denied all the accusations.
