The head of European diplomacy, Josep Borelj, announced that the negotiators of Serbia and Kosovo have agreed on measures to avoid further escalation.

"Serbia will stop issuing license plates with the names of Kosovo's cities, and Kosovo will suspend further actions related to the re-registration of vehicles," Borelj wrote on Twitter.

"We have an agreement. I can announce with great pleasure that the main negotiators of Kosovo and Serbia, with the mediation of the EU, have agreed on measures to avoid further escalation and to fully concentrate on the proposal for the normalization of their relations," said Borelj.

Borelj thanked Miroslav Lajčak for his "hard work" and added that he would invite the two sides to discuss the next steps, reports N1.

"I and the EU special representative Miroslav Lajčak will continue to facilitate the process of normalization of relations and regularly inform the EU member states and partners about the progress achieved by the parties," added the statement from Borelj.

The director of the Office for Kosovo and Metohija, Petar Petković, said that the agreement in Brussels means that there is no punitive policy against Serbs who drive cars with KM plates and that from Thursday there will be no fines of 150 euros.

Pristina negotiator Besnik Bisljimi stated that after the agreement "intense talks should continue on the EU proposal, supported by Germany and France, for the full normalization of relations".

Lajcak thanked the negotiators from Belgrade and Pristina for the constructive dialogue, as well as the State Department and American diplomacy "for their invaluable support".

The EU's special representative for dialogue between Serbia and Kosovo, Miroslav Lajčak, met earlier in Brussels with the negotiators of Serbia and Kosovo, Peter Petkovic and Besnik Bisljimi.

The head of the European Union Delegation in Serbia, Emanuel Žiofre, announced that the agreement between Belgrade and Pristina on license plates is very good news and added that now both sides can focus on "normalizing relations".

"Very good news from Brussels. With the help of the EU, an agreement was reached to avoid further escalation. Now the dialogue between Belgrade and Pristina can focus on the normalization of relations," Zofre wrote in a post on Twitter.
