Stevan Dojčinović, journalist from Serbia and editor of KRIK, is the winner of the award "champion in the fight against corruption" awarded by the US State Department for the third year in a row.
At a ceremony in Washington, Dojčinović was presented with the award by United States Secretary of State Anthony Blinken, and in addition to him, seven other journalists were awarded - Antonio Cervantes Garcia from Mexico, Jean de Dieu Rakotondramihamina from Madagascar, Cynthia Gabriel from Malaysia, Rozina Islam from Bangladesh, Marco Antonio Rueda Soto from Colombia, Kismah Salih Ali Mendeli from Iraq and Janet Zhou from Zimbabwe.
During the ceremony, Blinken pointed out that Dojčinović, like the other awardees, persevered in his work.
"You come from different countries, work in different institutions and face different challenges. But there are several things that unite you - you all persisted in your work despite intimidation, harassment and threats. You were interrogated, detained, labeled as enemies of the state and foreign agents the government, associates of criminals... But you refused to give up because of your commitment to justice and your countrymen," Blinken said, as reported by KRIK.
He added that Dojčinović's research exposed corruption and organized criminal groups and influenced citizens' awareness of the harmful consequences of corruption in Serbian society.
Stevan Dojčinović was born in Kruševac in 1985, and has been engaged in investigative journalism since 2008.
The Crime and Corruption Research Network (KRIK), where he is the editor, is a non-profit non-governmental organization established to improve investigative journalism in Serbia.
