The United States welcomes the agreement that Kosovo and Serbia reached in Ohrid with the mediation of the EU on the implementation of the Agreement on the Road to Normalization of Relations, the State Department announced last night.
"We commend the President of Serbia and the Prime Minister of Kosovo for their leadership in reaching an agreement. Fulfilling the obligations of Kosovo and Serbia from the Basic Agreement, within the framework of a permanent commitment to reconciliation, will provide significant opportunities for the citizens of both countries and accelerate their path to membership in the European Union," it is stated in announcement by US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken.
The announcement adds that the US will continue to be actively engaged, in cooperation with EU partners, "to support Kosovo and Serbia in their work on implementation in order to achieve predictable and peaceful relations".
"We will continue to support the improvement of stability and prosperity in the Western Balkans," the announcement states.
In the announcement, the European Union is thanked for mediating the negotiations, and the Government of North Macedonia for hosting and supporting the finalization of the agreement.
Blinken also stated on his Twitter account that he welcomed the agreement. He added that the US is proud to support the agreement and remains "committed to advancing European and Euro-Atlantic integration."
The meeting between Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić, Kosovo Prime Minister Aljbin Kurti and European Union officials Jozep Borelj and Miroslav Lajčak as part of a new round of dialogue on the normalization of relations between Belgrade and Pristina ended on Saturday in Ohrid, after almost 12 hours.
