In Croatia, every year there is a shortage of more and more people who will perform the job of gravedigger, and the Croatian Employment Service has declared this profession to be in short supply since last year 41 people were employed, while 128 were required.
For the past few years, the media have been warning about the shortage of gravediggers in Croatian cemeteries, but the situation has still not changed, according to the Hina agency.
At the city cemeteries in Zadar, for example, only eight undertakers and five undertakers work, while in Zagreb, 28 cemeteries have 50 workers.
"We have five to seven burials per day in all major cemeteries and up to two burials in smaller cemeteries, that is, a total of about 40 burials per day," says Zagrebački Holding.
Over the years, an increase in the number of workers in this profession has been observed, and in 2020 there were 54 workers, the year before last there were 72 workers, and in 2022 that number doubled to 128.
According to the advertisements on the Labor Exchange, the position of gravedigger requires elementary school education, a driver's license, and salaries start at 800 euros per month with paid transportation.
