Citizens of Serbia who own unregistered weapons can, from today until June 8, surrender those weapons at any police station, for which they will not be held criminally responsible or bear any consequences.
Citizens who hand over unregistered weapons during that period will not have to prove their origin, and they can leave them with the police every day from 19:XNUMX a.m. to XNUMX:XNUMX p.m., announced the Ministry of Internal Affairs (MUP) of Serbia.
They explained that this applies to all types of weapons, to automatic weapons as well as to any other, mine-explosive devices, weapon parts and ammunition that citizens illegally possessed.
Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić said on Sunday that he expects responsibility from citizens and asked them not to hide and throw weapons away, but to hand them over to the police.
He added that he expects "millions of bullets" to be handed over to the police in this way and reminded that there will be no penalties for those who do so in the next month, but that after that the penalties for possessing illegal weapons will be increased.
The Ministry of Internal Affairs launched the operation to surrender illegal weapons after two mass murders in the villages near Mladenovac and Smederevo, as well as in the Belgrade Elementary School "Vladislav Ribnikar", in which 17 people were killed and more than 20 were injured.
