Đorđe Mihailović, known as the guardian of Zejtinlik, died today at the age of 96, Radio Television of Serbia (RTS) reports.
Mihailović was born a decade after the end of the First World War, and he spent his life as a guard at the Serbian Military Cemetery in Thessaloniki, Zejtinlik.
The Mihailović family is originally from Grblje.
"Before it was my father, before my father was my grandfather. I am the third generation, the third generation. I come here every day, I live here, I sleep here in the cemetery," Mihailović told RTS earlier.
Mihailović was awarded the Order of the Serbian Flag, second degree, and the Order of Saint Sava, first degree.
He was a Greek citizen, and three years ago he was admitted to Serbian citizenship.
