Ministers of the Albanian party Democratic Union for Integration (DUI) submitted their conditional resignations to the Prime Minister of North Macedonia, Dimitar Kovačevski, which will come into effect when the opposition VMRO DPMNE votes for amendments to introduce Bulgarians into the Constitution.
This was announced by the undisputed leader of the largest Albanian party in North Macedonia, Ali Ahmeti, who published a letter to the coalition partner, Prime Minister and SDSM leader Dimitar Kovačevski on Facebook (facebook.com/AliAhmetiOfficial).
Ahmeti explained the decision to resign by saying that VMRO-DPMNE's support for constitutional changes was conditioned by the exit of DUI from the Government and pointed out that this is necessary because the country is in a critical phase of the European integration process, and the ruling Albanian party "takes responsibility and responsible steps".
The exit of DUI from the Government of North Macedonia, as the media reminds, was set as a condition by VMRO - DPMNE leader Hristijan Mickoski at a meeting with Prime Minister Dimitar Kovačevski at the Club of Deputies in Skopje on June 7.
The ruling coalition has started the process of constitutional changes to introduce Bulgarians into the Constitution in order to fulfill this obligation to continue negotiations with the EU by the end of November, but, according to the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Vice-President of the DUI Bujar Osmani, it lacks eight votes for the necessary two-thirds majority in the parliament with 120 seats.
In July 2022, North Macedonia began the first phase of negotiations with the European Union in Brussels, but in order to move to the second phase and start opening chapters, it must include Bulgarians in the Constitution by the end of the screening, for which the ruling coalition does not have the necessary support VMRO DPMNE which repeats daily that it "does not agree to changes according to the Bulgarian diktat" and calls for early elections.
