The President of the Republic of Srpska, Milorad Dodik, signed today the Decree on the Promulgation of the Law on Amendments to the Criminal Code of the Republic of Srpska, according to which defamation has become a criminal offense again.
"I am promulgating the Law on Amendments to the Criminal Code of the Republic of Srpska, which was adopted by the National Assembly of the Republic of Srpska at the session held on July 20, 2023," reads the Decree.

Bosnia and Herzegovina was the first in the region to decriminalize defamation, by passing the Law on protection against defamation, but the RS authorities decided to return it from civil litigation to the sphere of criminal proceedings.
The opposition, the media community in the RS and BiH, the civil sector and representatives of international organizations were against this law.
