The speaker of the parliament of North Macedonia, Talat Džaferi, will be the prime minister of the technical government that will be formed 100 days before the elections, the Albanian party Democratic Union for Integration (DUI), a member of the ruling coalition, decided.
This was announced on Facebook by the spokesman of the DUI, the head of diplomacy of North Macedonia, Bujar Osmani, stating that the Central Presidency of the DUI decided that the Speaker of the Assembly, Talat Džaferi, will be the Prime Minister of North Macedonia from January 28, 2024.
On December 4, the parliamentary political parties reached an agreement to hold the first round of presidential elections on April 24, 2024, and the second round of presidential and parliamentary elections on May 8.
The appointment of an Albanian as the technical prime minister, 100 days before the election, was part of the coalition agreement between former SDSM president Zoran Zaev and DUI leader Ali Ahmeti after the 2020 elections.
The Prime Minister of North Macedonia and SDSM leader Dimitar Kovačevski confirmed that he will respect the agreement reached by his predecessor about, as DUI officials point out, "the first Albanian prime minister in North Macedonia".
The appointment of Jaferi as the technical prime minister means that he will leave the leading position in the parliament, where, according to the media, he will be succeeded by SDSM cadre.
The largest Macedonian opposition party VMRO-DPMNE demanded the abandonment of the concept of a technical government for the preparation of the elections called the "Pržin government", and its leader Hristijan Mickoski openly stated that the party wants to prevent the election of an Albanian as the technical prime minister of North Macedonia.
