In four municipalities in the north of Kosovo, where the majority Serb population lives, graffiti appeared with the inscription "When the army returns to Kosovo, the Northern Brigade lives".
The deputy director of the police for the northern region, Veton Elšani, told Radio Free Europe (RSE) that the prosecution initiated the case because of "spreading hatred".
He added that for now it is not known who writes these graffiti.
The Government of Kosovo declared the organization Northern Brigade, together with the Civil Protection, as terrorist at the end of June 2023.
It is believed that these two organizations operate in the north of Kosovo and number hundreds of members from the ranks of the Serbian community.
This is not the first time that the Northern Brigade signs graffiti in the north of Kosovo, and some of them read "Don't worry, we are here, we are waiting".
About ten days before the attack on the Kosovo police carried out by an armed group of Serbs in the town of Banjska near Zvečani, the graffiti "When the army returns to Kosovo" also appeared in North Mitrovica.
Since the middle of last year, graffiti with an identical inscription has been appearing in cities all over Serbia, and it was made by fans of the football club Crvena zvezda.
New graffiti in the north of Kosovo appeared in the wake of discontent of the Serbian community after the decision of the Central Bank of Kosovo to make the euro the only means of payment, thereby abolishing the Serbian dinar. Serbs from Kosovo have various incomes from the Serbian budget, precisely in dinars.
Since the end of January, the Kosovo authorities have also closed seven Provisional Municipal Authorities, which, in parallel with the Kosovo ones, work in the Serbian system.
The international community called on Kosovo not to make decisions that negatively affect the Serbian community in Kosovo because they could fuel tensions.
Western countries demanded that all open issues be resolved within the dialogue between Kosovo and Serbia on the normalization of relations.
Graffiti with the inscription "When the army returns to Kosovo" was written in August last year on the monument to Petar II Petrović Njegoš in Podgorica, as well as near the former barracks in Podgorica.
The same graffiti was previously written in several cities in Serbia and Bosnia Herzegovina (BiH).
At the roundabout at the entrance to Budva, in Zavala, on December 14 last year, a large tricolor banner appeared with the inscription - "When the army returns to Kosovo".
That banner was removed a day later.
A banner with the same message was developed by fans of the Crvena zvezda football club during a friendly match with Italian Fiorentina on July 26 last year in Belgrade.
