Deputies of the ruling majority in the Assembly of Serbia today, with 153 votes in favor and five against, elected former Prime Minister Ana Brnabić as the President of the Assembly of Serbia, and she took her place at the president's table.
The election by public vote was carried out without the presence of the majority of the opposition, and MPs from the group "Mi glas iz naroda" and "We glas iz narod - Dr. Branimir Nestorović" voted against it.
The voting, as well as the entire session, was accompanied by hitherto unprecedented security measures, as more than ten members of the Interior Ministry in plainclothes stood next to the chairman's table the entire time.
In the official biography, it is written that Brnabić graduated from university in Great Britain, that before she became Prime Minister and held that position for the last three terms, she was the Minister for State Administration and Local Self-Government, that she participated in the founding of Naleda and the Peksim Foundation , that she is a member of the "New Leaders for Europe" group of the World Economic Forum.
Before the elections to the Government of Serbia, she was the director of the company Kontitnental wind Srbija, she writes in her official biography.
In the discussion about Ana Brnabić, the members of the opposition repeated accusations about affairs during her mandate as prime minister, about stolen elections and her previous inappropriate actions towards the opposition.
Members of the government gave her their trust and repeatedly said that she was an excellent prime minister and that they believe she will be good at the head of the Assembly.
The discussion was the least about the candidate, and it was characterized by arguments, insults, accusations, hitting the benches and frequent violations of the Rules of Procedure.
Subsequently, six vice-presidents of the Assembly should be elected, as agreed upon during the consultations.
It is expected that the General Secretary of the Assembly will be appointed, members of working bodies and members of permanent parliamentary delegations in international institutions will be elected.
The new President of the Assembly of Serbia should call for elections for the city government of Belgrade, which, as announced by the President of Serbia, Aleksandar Vučić, would be held on June 2.
