The company Rio Tinto announced today that the environmental impact assessment study, carried out by independent experts, shows that the Jadar project can be developed in a safe manner and in accordance with the highest standards of environmental protection of the Republic of Serbia and the European Union (EU).
"The Rio Tinto company has been present in Serbia since 2001. Based on the conducted studies and research, we believe that the Jadar Project has the potential to become a world-class resource that could act as a driver for the development of a complete chain for the production of electric vehicles in Serbia," she stated. the company in a statement sent to the media.
They added that they support further discussion and fact-based public dialogue involving all relevant experts and stakeholders from the local community and institutions.
Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić told the Financial Times that it seems that "the new guarantees of Rio Tinto and the European Union are ready to respond to Serbia's concerns about whether the necessary environmental standards will be met at the Jadar site and announced the possibility of opening the mine in 2028."
