Two trucks were set on fire last night an hour after midnight in North Mitrovica, and a passenger vehicle was also damaged in that fire. The fire was most likely arson, Deputy Director of the Kosovo Police for the Northern Region, Veton Eljšani, told Radio Free Europe (RSE).
He stated that there are no suspects for now, and that the investigation is ongoing, but that he cannot provide more details.
RSE has learned that the owners of the truck are Albanians who have a wholesale business in North Mitrovica, while the damaged passenger vehicle is owned by a Serb DP
The fire, which engulfed the trucks, was preceded by three detonations.
In the north of Kosovo, where the majority Serb population lives, several similar incidents were recorded this year. At the beginning of June, two cars burned in the same location as last night.
At the beginning of April, a member of the Kosovo border police had his car set on fire in North Mitrovica.
At the beginning of March, a restaurant owned by the then deputy mayor of the municipality of Zvečan, Nataša Tomanić, burned down. She and authorities said the fire was suspected to have been deliberately set.
At the end of March, a building owned by Nenad Radosavljević, former director of the Department for Sports, Youth and Culture in the municipality of Leposavić, burned down. Radosavljević told RSE at the time that he believed that the building was set on fire and that the motive for it was of a political nature.
Also, at the end of 2022 and the beginning of 2023, there was a "trend" of ignition of vehicles bearing RKS (Republic of Kosovo) license plates. By the way, due to the issue of re-registration of vehicles from Serbian to Kosovo license plates, in November 2022, members of the Serbian community left the Kosovo institutions in the north at the initiative of the Serbian List, the largest party of Serbs that has the support of Belgrade.
