A patrol from the contingent of the Serbian Army in Lebanon was opened fire last night, the Ministry of Defense of Serbia announced, Radio Television of Serbia (RTS) reports.
The announcement states that the Serbian Army vehicle was hit by several bullets, and that the vehicle's armor protected the soldiers.
"During the performance of regular tasks in the UNIFIL peacekeeping operation in Lebanon, fire was opened on a patrol from the contingent of the Serbian Armed Forces last night," announced the Ministry of Defense.
"None of the engaged members of the patrol were injured and all members of the contingent are safe. The Serbian Army patrol carried out its task in accordance with the procedures and rules of engagement in this multinational operation. After the ceasefire and the arrival of the rapid response team, the patrol returned to the United Nations base , the announcement states.
RTS states that around 280 members of the Serbian Armed Forces and the Ministry of Defense are in nine peacekeeping missions - five of the United Nations, three of the European Union and one that is outside the aforementioned international organizations (MFO in Sinai).
The media reports that almost two-thirds of Serbian peacekeepers are in the UNIFIL mission in Lebanon, and that the Serbian Army has been there since 2010.
