For the first time in the history of the prestigious Emmy Awards, the Bulgarian media was nominated in the News and Current Affairs category. The International Academy of Television Arts and Sciences recognized the story of investigative journalist NOVA Marijeta Nikolaeva and cameraman Tasi Asenov about the biggest Bulgarian refugee tragedy, which happened near Lokorski. Proof of NOVA's success are the other nominations in this category from the BBC, Sky News, Channel 4, Al Jazeera, Globo News and UVDA, which come from five more countries - the United Kingdom, Brazil, India, Israel and Qatar.
Last year on January 17, 18 migrants - children and men - were found dead near Lokorski, they suffocated in specially built hiding places while trying to cross illegally. The vehicle was covered and under pressure like a metal coffin - without oxygen and light. Seven agonizing hours. Some survived by chance, since after a technical failure on the truck, the driver left the vehicle and ran away. Survivors who were between life and death, with their last efforts crawled and asked for help. Six survivors stood exclusively in front of journalist Marijeta Nikolaeva and camera Tasija Asenov and told a heartbreaking story about the horror of the deadly journey, about migrant trafficking and feeling helpless while watching your friends die in your arms. All of them flee Afghanistan in search of a normal life. They say the truck has passed four police checks since crossing the border with Sofia. Because of the tragic incident, six Bulgarians were arrested, who organized illegal transport and took substantial sums for it. Among them is a former border policeman.
