Ermal Hoxha, the grandson of the former Albanian communist leader Enver Hoxha, was sentenced to ten years in prison for cocaine trafficking, according to a court announcement distributed today to the media in Tirana.
Ermal Hoxha (42) is part of a group of nine people, including two Colombians, sentenced to prison terms of 10 to 13 years.
They were found guilty of belonging to a criminal group in the cocaine trade originating from Cuba, through Albania to the countries of Western Europe.
Ermal Hoxha and his accomplices were arrested in January 2015 in a police operation during which 120 kilograms of cocaine were seized and a drug processing laboratory was found 68 kilometers south of Tirana.
Hoxha and others were arrested in January 2015 on suspicion of creating and managing a criminal group that smuggled cocaine into Western Europe. The police then confiscated 120 kilograms of drugs, money and weapons.
Ermal is the eldest grandson of Enver Hoxha, who led Albania from 1944 until his death in 1985.
