Croatia's Minister of the Interior Davor Božinović said last night that Croatia is also temporarily suspending Syrian requests for asylum, as several European countries have already done so.
"We have instructed the competent services to temporarily suspend asylum requests for citizens of Syria until a decision is made at the level of the European Union," Božinović told reporters in Zagreb.
He emphasized that Syrians escaped from a regime that killed its citizens and used chemical weapons against them.
"That regime no longer exists after more than half a century that the al-Assad dynasty ruled, and we hope that the situation in Syria will allow the Syrians to return to their country, which is in the interest of, I would say, everyone," said the Croatian minister, Croatian Radio and Television reported.
Several European countries yesterday halted the processing and verification of asylum applications from people from Syria after the overthrow of Bashar al-Assad's regime over the weekend.
