The President of Serbia, Aleksandar Vučić, accused the President of the Board of Managers of Vijesti that he is known "for his naked anti-Serbian ideology".
He said this as a guest on RTS, where he commented on Ivanović's column published on the Nova portal, in which he called on him to retire from politics and thereby "save Serbia and the region".
"Read the text of Željko Ivanović, known for his stripped-down anti-Serbian ideology. What does the text say, 'Vučić, listen to those protesting, withdraw'. Is it all like I said. I don't think I need to add anything more than that." Vucic said.
The Party of Freedom and Justice from Serbia reacted to the statement of the President of Serbia.
"When Vučić says of Željko Ivanović, a journalist from Podgorica Vijesti, that he is known for his anti-Serbian ideology, it is not only an attack on the freedom of the media, but also a threat to his security. The President of Serbia uttered this condemnation only because Ivanović wrote an article in which he called Vučić to withdraw and save Serbia and the region," the statement of the Party of Freedom and Justice states.
"It is especially dangerous that the safety of journalists in a neighboring country is threatened by Vučić, who has a long history of reckoning with independent journalists. While he was serving as Minister of Information in the government of Šešelj and Milošević, journalist Slavko Ćuruvija was killed, and a scandalous law on information was passed because of which numerous media outlets were shut down, and independent journalists lost their jobs. This kind of call for the lynching of Željko Ivanović, uttered on the public service without any reaction from the editor and host of the show, Gorislav Papić, reminds of the regime's labeling of dissidents, which precedes confrontations and physical attacks. Students, activists, journalists, professors and artists in Serbia live that scenario, but that is no longer enough for Vučić, so this time he drew a target on a journalist from Montenegro." in the announcement of the Party of Freedom and Justice.
