Danish diplomat Peter Sorensen will most likely be appointed as the new European Union (EU) special representative for dialogue in the process of normalizing relations between Serbia and Kosovo, Radio Free Europe (RFE) reports today, citing EU diplomatic sources.
According to RFE/RL, European Foreign Minister Kaja Kalas has already forwarded his name to EU member states.
The same sources confirm that this proposal will be discussed by EU ambassadors at their next meeting on Tuesday, January 21. All appointment procedures should be completed by the end of the month, so that Sorensen can take office on February 1.
The mandate of outgoing dialogue envoy Miroslav Lajčak expires on January 31.
All European Union member states need to agree on Sorensen's appointment.
Peter Sorensen has more diplomatic experience in European structures than in his home country of Denmark. He was head of delegation in Skopje and Sarajevo, and held several positions during the UNMIK administration in Kosovo.
He currently serves as a senior advisor at the EU External Action Service, an institution dealing with the process of normalizing relations between Serbia and Kosovo.
EU diplomatic sources tell RFE/RL that Peter Sorensen is expected to serve exclusively as an envoy for dialogue. Miroslav Lajčák, the outgoing EU special representative, had "other regional issues" as part of his position.
