Rally in support of Novi Sad students in Belgrade: "Those who attack students have not been prosecuted and convicted"

The gathering of students in Belgrade near the Rectorate building on Student Square, where they expressed support for the Novi Sad academics, who were beaten with baseball bats last night by a group of attackers dressed in black and who allegedly came from the premises of the Serbian Progressive Party (SNS), ended this evening shortly after 19.30:XNUMX p.m.

Belgrade students sent a message that they do not want violence and that they stand with their injured colleagues from Novi Sad.

The banners they carried read "Belgrade is with Novi Sad", "Your batons will not conduct", "Meet the demands", "You will not beat us".

One of the students said that tonight's rally was not planned and that students and citizens gathered literally spontaneously at the call of students blocking the Faculty of Architecture of the University of Belgrade.

"The call from our colleagues from the Faculty of Architecture to gather in front of the Rectorate was around 16 p.m. And here we are, in just an hour and a half or two, a large number of students and citizens gathered in solidarity with the students in Novi Sad who were beaten last night," said one of the gathered academics.

He pointed out that the demands of the student protest have not been met and told the citizens of Serbia to "not believe what they hear on Pink TV and other regime media."

The student who wore a fluorescent vest and provided security for tonight's rally said that students do not react with violence, so they do not want violence to be perpetrated against them.

"Instead of reducing violence, because that is one of the goals of our demands, we have a situation where we have some incident and violence against students almost every day. Honestly, it scares me. I don't know how to fight it. Our demands are not being met. Those who attack students are not prosecuted and convicted, so it obviously gives them a boost," the student pointed out.

She emphasized that students and citizens in Belgrade gathered to support their colleagues in Novi Sad.

"We don't want to draw attention to ourselves. Students from Novi Sad are in the spotlight tonight due to the horrific violence," she concluded.
