Interior Minister Ivica Dačić told the "Danas" portal that the police own sonic weapons, or colloquially called "sonic cannons," meaning that these systems, which were purchased in 2021, are owned by the Ministry of Interior.
As reported by Danas, Dačić stated last night that these systems are in warehouses in boxes, that they are owned by the Ministry of Internal Affairs, but that they have not been put into use, nor mounted on any vehicle or system.
Asked why he then stated that the Ministry of Interior does not possess a "sonic cannon" or any other similar sonic weapons, the minister said that it was a clumsy statement.
"That is a clumsy statement. What was meant by that was that the Ministry of Interior did not include this tool in its arsenal of coercive means," Dačić told "Danas".
Asked why the state "purchased" the system in advance, when their use is not allowed, Dačić said that it was a failed investment.
"It was probably thought at the time that a new law on police would be adopted that would provide for the use of sound weapons as another means of coercion," he added.
