Traffic jams on the roads leading from northern Croatia to Ormož, Slovenia, on Friday afternoons and Saturday mornings have become a common occurrence.
Hundreds of people from Međimurje and Varaždin are crossing the border in search of cheaper groceries in Slovenian stores, writes Jutarnji list.
Inflation and the constant rise in prices of basic foodstuffs in Croatia have forced many to look for alternatives. Slovenia has proven to be the right solution. Although until a few years ago this kind of shopping was reserved for occasional visits, it has now become a part of everyday life.
Ormož is home to numerous retail chains that offer competitive prices. Food, household goods, and even fresh meat and dairy products are often significantly cheaper than in Croatia, reports Capital.ba.
Many customers claim that despite the travel costs, shopping in Slovenia is well worth it.
While Slovenians are recording an increase in turnover in their stores, economists warn that the mass departure of Croatians abroad for shopping could further damage the domestic economy.
However, for the average citizen, finding and finding better prices is currently a priority.
