A businessman of Serbian origin who lived in Florida, USA, and was accused of kidnapping and murdering his estranged wife in Spain, has been found dead after an "apparent suicide" in a federal prison in south Florida, his defense attorney said today.
David Knezevic, 37, was awaiting trial at the Federal Detention Center in Miami. He was charged last year with the kidnapping and murder of 40-year-old Ana Hedao Knezevic, whose disappearance drew international media attention.
Knezevic's attorney, Jane Weintraub, said she learned he was found dead in his prison cell on Monday, and the Federal Bureau of Prisons confirmed this.
Ana Knežević disappeared from her apartment in Madrid in February 2024, five weeks after moving there. Her body was never found.
A man wearing a motorcycle helmet was seen sneaking into her building and disabling a security camera, and was later seen carrying a suitcase.
Prosecutors say they have strong evidence that Knežević was the man with the helmet. They say that six days before Ana's disappearance, he flew from Miami to Turkey and from there to Serbia, where he rented a car.
A surveillance camera captured Knezevic in a Madrid hardware store the same day his wife disappeared, and his rental car had covered 7.700 kilometers when it was returned five weeks later, officials said.
After 13 years of marriage, the couple, according to the prosecution, were in the middle of a contentious divorce, fighting over real estate worth millions of dollars, and attorney Weintraub said the divorce was amicable and a financial arrangement was being worked out.
