The most influential group of parties in the EU, the European People's Party (EPP), called on Serbian authorities to fully align with EU foreign policy and said that "May 9th should be celebrated as Europe Day, not a parade by Russian President Vladimir Putin."
The EPP, which brings together conservative and right-wing parties in the EU, stressed in a statement that the European Commission's balanced reports show that Serbia's gross domestic product is growing and that Serbia has reached an international level of investment confidence.
But the EPP also warns that key problems with the rule of law, unresolved issues around Kosovo, tensions with neighbors, and uncertainty about the country's foreign policy direction remain on Serbia's path to the EU.
A statement issued by the EPP shadow rapporteur for Serbia, Davor Ivo Stir, points out that the mass student protests sent a strong message about the need to tackle corruption.
It also states that Serbia is expected to implement the obligations from the Brussels and Ohrid Agreements on the normalization of relations with Kosovo, and adds that Serbia must refrain from policies that undermine the sovereignty of neighboring states.
The EPP emphasizes that no European leader, especially one affiliated with the European People's Party, should participate in Putin's parade in Moscow and that Europe Day should be celebrated on May 9, not Putin's parade.
The Serbian Progressive Party has the status of an associate member of the European People's Party.
