The Chief of the Police Department in Novi Sad, Goran Radonjić, was dismissed from his position today, reports "Danas", citing unofficial information from sources in the Serbian Ministry of Internal Affairs.
The media outlet writes that, according to their information, the dismissal occurred due to police intervention against supporters of the Serbian Progressive Party in front of the party's offices on Oslobodjenja Boulevard on Sunday.
"The police then intervened with batons against SNS activists, after they repeatedly threw eggs and plastic bottles at citizens who were demonstrating in front of the party's premises," Danas reminds.
The Nova.rs portal writes that Radonjić was punished for police brutality against activists - he was convicted by a final verdict for beating Novi Sad activist Goran Urošević.
Novi Sad police officers Slobodan Drmanac and Goran Radonjić beat activist Goran Urošević in 2017. Drmanac and Radonjić beat him first in front of the building, then dragged him into the police building, handcuffed him until he passed out, and then continued to beat him. They were convicted for this, but instead of being held accountable, the officers were promoted, and five years later Radonjić was appointed acting chief of the Novi Sad Police Department.
Radonjić's dismissal has been demanded for months by the citizens of Novi Sad, opposition councilors, and activists, due to incidents involving police officers in Novi Sad in the last six months, Nova.rs reports.
