A strong police force, fully equipped to break up demonstrations, was hitting citizens and students with shields and pushing them away before six o'clock this morning, who were blocking the entrances to the City Council of Novi Sad, Serbia, in order to bring councilors from the ruling coalition led by the Serbian Progressive Party (SNS) into the parliament building.
More police arrived in front of the parliament building this morning.
Citizens shouted "They will beat us until they kill us all" and "You are protecting the Mafia."
The parliamentary session is scheduled for today at ten o'clock.
Citizens and students declared a blockade of the Novi Sad City Assembly last night and called on demonstrators to remain on the streets in front of the city parliament overnight.
"Let's not let them enter the parliament, let's not let them lie and steal from us anymore. Happy freedom, freedom-loving Novi Sad," representatives of the citizens' assemblies told the gathered demonstrators.
Farmers parked their tractors near the entrance to the City Hall.
A metal fence has been erected around the city parliament building, and police intervention forces are in front of and inside the building.
Students and citizens had previously requested to attend the session, but were not allowed to do so, as they had been on several previous occasions.
At the protest, citizens said they were demanding that elections be called for local community councils.
