Judge killed in courtroom in Tirana

Court of Appeals Judge Astrit Kalaja was killed and two people were injured when a man opened fire in a courtroom in the Albanian capital Tirana.

The attacker, E.Š., fled the scene of the crime but was later arrested, police said, according to The Guardian. Police also found a revolver suspected of being used in the attack.

Kalaja died while being transported to the hospital, while the injuries of the wounded are not life-threatening.

Details about the motive for the attack and the nature of the case under consideration have not yet been released. The case list on the court's website states that the case involved real estate.

Following major judicial reforms launched in 2016 with support from the EU and the US, tens of thousands of cases in Albania have been delayed for several years.
