Kosovo President Vjosa Osmani signed a decree today giving the mandate to form a new government of Kosovo to the President of "Vetevendosje" Albin Kurti.
"This decision was made following the official proposal of the Vetëvendosje Movement party, which won the largest number of seats in the Assembly, according to the results of the elections held on February 9 this year," the Kosovo President's office announced.
According to the Constitution, the president, in consultation with the party or coalition that has the majority in the parliament, gives a mandate to the candidate for prime minister.
The prime minister-designate then has 15 days to present the composition of the government and request that it be voted on by the Kosovo Assembly.
In order to be voted in, the proposed prime minister-designate must secure at least 61 of the 120 votes of the deputies of the Assembly of Kosovo.
In the event that she fails to secure the support of 61 MPs, President Osmani is required to invite parties to consultations within ten days and decide on a new prime minister-designate who has a better chance of forming a government.
The new prime minister-designate has an additional 15 days to submit the new cabinet composition to the parliament.
If a government is not formed after the second attempt, President Osmani, according to the Constitution, must call new early elections, which must be held within 40 days.
The Self-Determination Movement, which won the most votes in the February 9 elections, has 48 MPs and is expected to secure the support of seven MPs from minority non-Serb communities, as well as the possibility of including the Social Democratic Initiative (NISMA), which has three MPs, in the new government.
Yesterday, Kurti's party announced that they would propose a coalition to the Democratic League of Kosovo, while LDK leader Ljumir Abdixiku also stated yesterday that they would not enter a coalition with Vetëvendosje.
