Jugoslav Kostić, a member of the last Presidency of the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia (SFRY), died today in Stara Pazova, at the age of 86, after a short illness, reports the Beta agency.
He was born on February 19, 1939, in the village of Rudine, near Zvečan, writes RTV Stara Pazova, and is reported by Nova.rs.
He completed elementary school in Banjska, high school in Kosovska Mitrovica, and the Faculty of Agriculture in Belgrade.
From 1976 to 1986, he was a member of the Executive Council of the Stara Pazova Municipal Assembly, and since 1986, the president of that municipality.
In October 1988, he was elected President of the Presidency of the Socialist Autonomous Province (SAP) of Vojvodina, and after the formation of the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia (FRY), he was President of the Citizens' Council of the Federal Assembly of the FRY, and from August 1999 until his retirement, he was the FRY Ambassador to Romania.
Serbian Minister of Internal Affairs and President of the Socialist Party of Serbia (SPS), Ivica Dačić, sent a telegram of condolences to the family and friends of the deceased, who was one of the founders of the SPS and a long-time member of the party's Main Board.
"Jugoslav Kostić was one of the most prominent fighters against Vojvodina separatism and autonomism in the late 1980s. He sincerely advocated for constitutional changes and the unity of Serbia... We will remember Comrade Jugoslav Kostić as a sincere socialist, a modest and honorable man who fought for the principles of social justice, solidarity and equality among people and nations," reads the telegram of condolences from Minister Dačić.
