Two key conditions for Kosovo's progress on its European path are the implementation of reforms and the normalization of relations with Serbia, said today the European Commission spokesperson for foreign affairs and security policy, neighbourhood relations and enlargement, Julija Macik.
According to her, the EU wants to lift the measures introduced against Kosovo in 2023 and help the Kosovo authorities continue their path towards membership in the Union.
"The Commission took the first steps towards the gradual lifting of the measures in force in May 2025. As previously stated, our goal is to further lift these measures. We welcome the peaceful handover of local administration in the 4 northern municipalities and expect the new mayors to represent the interests of all citizens," it said in its response to koha.net.
Koha previously reported that the EU will not lift measures against Kosovo even after the handover of local authority in the north to Serbian representatives who won the elections.
According to the portal, France and Italy, with the support of Spain, Hungary and Slovakia, opposed the lifting of the measures imposed on Kosovo at the last meeting, and "at least 13 countries demanded their lifting."
According to statements by some European diplomats to koha.net, the European Commission is "hiding behind some member states and playing a double game."
