Serbia must accelerate reforms in the areas of the rule of law and media freedom, but also further align itself with the EU's foreign and security policy.
These are some of the tasks that Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić received from European leaders.
European Commission President Von der Leyen said that the meeting with Vučić reviewed Serbia's progress on its path towards the EU.
"We discussed the importance of accelerating reforms, especially in the areas of the rule of law and media freedom. We stressed that enlargement is a geostrategic imperative and that there is a need to further align Serbia with the EU's foreign and security policy," von der Leyen wrote on the X network.
She added that they welcomed the steps Serbia is taking to diversify its energy sources and supply routes and reduce dependence on Russia, "whose unreliability has been demonstrated repeatedly."
"Europe has consistently shown solidarity with Serbia through major investments in energy infrastructure and support for vulnerable households. As European Council President Antonio Costa and I stressed during our visits earlier this year, we remain fully committed to seeing a democratic Serbia in the EU. You can count on our support," said Von der Leyen.
