Kosovo President Vjosa Osmani asked Pope Leo XIV today for the Holy See to officially recognize Kosovo's independence.
After the meeting held on Saturday, in a video message posted on Facebook, she said that it was an important day for relations between Kosovo and the Vatican.
She stated that, in addition to meeting with the Pope, she also spoke with the Vatican Secretary of State, Cardinal Pietro Parolin.
"At the meeting with His Holiness, I expressed the hope and faith of the entire people of Kosovo that the Vatican will finally make the long-awaited decision to recognize the Republic of Kosovo, acknowledging the long-standing suffering of our people in their efforts to live freely and independently," Osmani said.
She emphasized that such a decision would have a positive impact not only on Kosovo, but also on peace, stability and prosperity in the region.
Osmani also highlighted Kosovo's historical ties to Christianity, emphasizing that the "Dardan land" has given the world prominent figures such as George Kastriot - Skanderbeg, Saint Mother Teresa, Emperors Constantine and Justinian, as well as other important figures in the history of humanism and European civilization.
At the headquarters of the Special Mission of Kosovo to the Holy See, Osmani will organize a New Year's reception for Vatican representatives, diplomats and other dignitaries.
As announced, the Kosovo President will carry out a number of other activities during her visit, with the aim of deepening relations between Kosovo and the Holy See.
