Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić said that he will not go to Brussels for the EU-Western Balkans Summit, meaning that Serbia will not have its representative, reports N1.
"For the first time in the last 13 or 14 years, neither I nor anyone else will go to that intergovernmental conference. No one will represent the Republic of Serbia, so the Western Balkans will be without the Republic of Serbia," the president told RTS.
He stated that he made such a decision so that no one else would be blamed and so that the Government would not suffer any pressure.
He said he had spoken with a large number of European leaders in the previous 24 hours.
"I am sincerely grateful for the respect shown towards Serbia by Ursula von der Leyen and Antonio Costa. I am also grateful to President Macron, with whom I spoke last night. I believe that everything I do, I do for the citizens of Serbia. Regardless of the fact that I know that this decision will cause criticism, both in Brussels and from those who always criticize, even when they do not know exactly what they are criticizing. I believe that by doing this I am protecting the Republic of Serbia and its interests, because we have to show what we have done," said Vučić.
He reiterated that Serbia will continue its European path while he is president, and as he said, we will see later, RTS reports.
The EU-Western Balkans summit is taking place in Brussels on Wednesday.
