A rally in support of that country and its President Nicolas Maduro, who is in prison in the US, was held this evening in front of the Venezuelan Embassy in Belgrade, organized by the League of Communist Youth of Yugoslavia (SKOJ).
Maduro was captured in a US military intervention on May 3 in Caracas and taken to New York where he is to face charges of drug trafficking.
Aleksandar Banjanac, Secretary General of the New Communist Party of Yugoslavia (NKPJ), of which SKOJ is a youth wing, told Beta that with the rally "Hands Off Venezuela, Free President Maduro Immediately" they want, above all, to convey the message that it is necessary to free President Maduro and his wife.
"What the US did is a shameless act, a brazen act of literal terrorism, and we cannot characterize it in any other way. It goes beyond any talk about violating international law or whining about international law being dead," said Banjanac.
He added that the NKPJ demands that the state of Serbia unequivocally condemn the terrorist act of the USA and its President Trump, and also unequivocally express a demand for the immediate release of the president of a sovereign, independent state.
"So, that is the bare minimum that Serbia must do, and it is obliged to do so by its past and the history we have in that conflict with NATO, primarily with NATO and the USA, but also generally by all our libertarian traditions that would be trampled on in some way if we were to bow our heads and remain silent in the face of such injustice," said Banjanac.
Before the gathering, the participants were invited to the Venezuelan Embassy, where they were greeted, thanked, and invited to sign the book of condolences by the country's ambassador to Belgrade, Hajdis Brisenjo.
The Cuban ambassador to Belgrade was also present.
Briseño said that Venezuela was aware of the threats but was not afraid.
"The fact is that we are faced with an extremely powerful enemy," said the ambassador, adding that at this moment Venezuela has three goals, the first of which is preserving peace in the country.
Briseño listed the second goal for Venezuela as the return of the president and first lady to the country, and the third as "preserving our Bolivarian Republic."
The ambassador also said that unity makes Venezuela stronger than ever, and that the country faces new threats every day.
Representatives of the NKPJ and SKOJ spoke at the gathering, emphasizing that resistance to what happened in Caracas should be heard from all over the world, including Serbia.
They also stressed the demand that Serbia condemn the events in Venezuela, not only as a violation of international law but also, as they said, as an act of terrorism.
Goran Puzić from the Socialist Movement also spoke, expressing support for Maduro and Venezuela, including the Movement's founder Aleksandar Vulin.
The crowd carried the flags of Venezuela, China, Palestine, Russia, North Korea, and a Serbian flag with a five-pointed star, and chanted "Viva Maduro! Viva Venezuela!" (Long live Maduro! Long live Venezuela!).
