By the verdict of the Higher Court in Novi Sad, the Joint Stock Company for the Management of Public Railway Infrastructure "Infrastruktura Željeznice Srbije" and the Republic of Serbia are obliged to pay compensation totaling 44 million dinars (a little more than 374 thousand euros) to the family members of those killed in the collapse of the canopy at the Railway Station.
This is compensation for non-pecuniary damage due to mental anguish suffered due to the death of a loved one, as follows: to plaintiffs KM and KV, the amount of 12 million dinars each, and to plaintiffs KM and KT, the amount of ten million dinars each, all with statutory default interest starting from December 12, 2025, when the verdict was rendered.
The payment deadline is 15 days from the date the judgment becomes final.
"By the same judgment, the defendants are obligated to jointly and severally compensate the plaintiffs for the costs of the civil proceedings, with statutory default interest, starting from the date of enforcement, until payment, within 15 days from the date the judgment becomes final, under threat of execution," the High Court states.
He adds that an appeal against the verdict is allowed to the Court of Appeal in Novi Sad.
By a verdict from November last year, "Serbian Railway Infrastructure" and the Republic of Serbia were ordered to pay plaintiff Š.R. five million dinars and plaintiff Š.L. 4,5 million dinars as compensation for non-pecuniary damage.
Also, by a verdict from October 2024, the same defendants were sentenced to pay compensation in the amount of 28 million dinars to the plaintiffs RZ and RZ.
When a canopy collapsed in front of the Novi Sad Railway Station on November 1, 2024, 16 people died and one person was seriously injured.
Three other civil proceedings are ongoing regarding this death.
