The board of the opposition Freedom and Justice Party (SSP) of the Belgrade municipality of Vračar announced today that the monument to Borislav Pekić on Cvetni Square has been damaged.
The face of the seated life-size sculpture of Pekić has been spray-painted and "HRT" is written on his chest.
On Facebook, the SSP, along with a video of the monument and Pekić's quote: "When a person is left in the dark, he does not look for the one who put out the candle, but for another candle," wrote that "now is the time to turn on the light and hold accountable all those who have been spreading hatred and SRS/SNS politics for years."
Pekić (1930-1992) was one of the most important Serbian writers, screenwriters and academics and one of the 13 intellectuals who renewed the work of the Democratic Party.
The monument - a life-size bronze statue, the work of sculptor Zoran Kuzmanović, was unveiled on March 2, 2016, at Cvetni Square, at the initiative of the family and the "Borislav Pekić" Foundation.
