Albulena Haxhiu was elected President of the Assembly of Kosovo at today's constituent session.

As the largest parliamentary group, the Self-Determination Movement was entitled to nominate a female Speaker of the Assembly, and Hadžija was the name they proposed.

With 66 votes in favor, 44 against, and eight abstentions, Haxhiu was elected as the Speaker of Parliament.

MPs from the Self-Determination Party and MPs from minority communities voted in favor of her election, while MPs from the Democratic Party of Kosovo, the Democratic League of Kosovo, and the Serbian List voted against, and some MPs from the Alliance for the Future of Kosovo abstained.

The election of Hajji was preceded by the verification of the mandate of the MP and the swearing-in.

Ardian Gola from the Self-Determination Movement, Vlora Çitaku from the Democratic Party of Kosovo, Kujtim Shala from the Democratic League of Kosovo, Emilija Redžepi from the Multiethnic Group and Slavko Simić from the Serbian List were elected as new Vice Presidents of the Assembly of Kosovo.

They were elected by a package vote, receiving the support of 104 MPs, three voted against, while six abstained.

The new Speaker of the Assembly of Kosovo, Albulena Haxhiu, stated after the election that she would justify the trust placed in her to perform this function with daily work, transparency and full dedication.

In her speech after taking office, she said that she would strive to ensure that each MP finds their space with the same dignity and respect.

"Today, I assume this duty with full awareness of the constitutional weight it carries. I will justify this trust with daily work, transparency and complete dedication," she said to Hadžiju.

She added that her task will be to ensure that the Parliament functions with dignity, transparency and mutual respect, in accordance with the Constitution, laws and parliamentary practice.

"I will try to ensure that each of you finds your space here with the same dignity and respect, because a functional Parliament is a prerequisite for a strong state and a stable democracy," she said.

Haxhiu pledged to perform the function of president "impartially, with integrity and full institutional commitment."

After the end of the constituent session, Haxhiu announced the holding of a new session of parliament, at which the agenda will include the election of the new Kosovo Government, headed by Prime Minister Albin Kurti.
