A 38-year-old man died after tonsillectomy at the General Hospital in Čačak, the Serbian Ministry of Health announced on February 12th.
"The patient, although not our insured, independently registered for the aforementioned surgical intervention due to respiratory problems that he had suffered from for years, aware of the risks of the intervention itself due to other associated diseases from which he suffered," they said.
The Ministry of Health announced that it had sent its inspectors to Čačak to investigate the case.
They also state that the management of the Otorhinolaryngology Department at that hospital has been taken over by doctors from UKC Serbia and UKC Kragujevac "until all circumstances that led to two deaths in this department in a short period of time are determined."
In addition, the Minister of Health has issued an order to introduce temporary measures in the Čačak General Hospital, which includes taking over the management of this health institution in the coming period.
A few days earlier, a four-year-old girl died, also due to complications after tonsillectomy at that hospital.
Due to this case, the acting director of the General Hospital in Čačak, Dejan Dabić, resigned on February 11, and the Ministry of Health launched an external oversight of the hospital's work to check the quality of professional work, that is, the actions of doctors in this case.
The Higher Public Prosecutor's Office in Čačak stated on February 10 that an autopsy had been ordered and that it would then decide on the further course of the proceedings.
Citizens in Čačak protested for two evenings over the girl's death, demanding accountability for the outcome of the operation.
