The ship Galeb, permanently moored to the Rijeka breakwater, was damaged last night in a maritime accident in the port of Rijeka when the cargo ship "Deniz Akay", while leaving the berth, lost power and hit the ship.
There were no injuries.
The ship Galeb, known as the floating residence of Josip Broz Tito, was declared a cultural asset by the Croatian Ministry of Culture in 2006, and since 2017 it has been part of the European project Tourist Valorization of Representative Monuments of Rijeka's Industrial Heritage.
According to data from the Port of Rijeka Authority, all relevant services were notified after the event, and more information about the damage will be known after the completion of the investigation.
Maritime accident investigator Slaven Bušić stated that the Agency conducts safety investigations independently of other investigations to determine the causes and circumstances of the accident, HRT reports.
After the incident, the Mayor of Rijeka, Iva Rinčić, said that the most important thing was that there were no injuries or pollution, and that the damage had yet to be determined.
"This is a city property in which significant funds from the taxpayers of the City of Rijeka have been invested, and therefore it is extremely important for us to establish all the facts. It is necessary to investigate in detail what exactly happened and what the reasons for the accident are. The City of Rijeka, in cooperation with the competent services, will monitor the development of the situation and, after assessing the damage, will take all necessary steps to repair it," said Rinčić.
