Citizens and journalists gathered at 19 p.m. in front of the N1 building in Belgrade to express solidarity with the editorial staff after the dismissal of the previous director of N1 television, Igor Božić.
In addition to citizens, the support rally was attended by numerous fellow journalists from other newsrooms, bikers, and public figures.
The gathered greeted the N1 journalists with applause, and a banner with the inscription "N1ko nije sam" was unfurled.
N1 employees had a meeting today with the new executive director of news, Brent Sadler, but the atmosphere in the newsroom is unchanged, as employees remain concerned, reports an N1 reporter.
The support rally was called by journalist associations, after N1 employees held a protest yesterday, concerned about Božić's dismissal and whether it could mean a change in editorial policy.
On Friday, the new management informed Božić that he had been dismissed from his position as director of the company, and then informed him that he was not assigned and that until the Adria News Network board decides on his status, he will not be managing the editorial office.
Božić's current status is employed but not assigned and he no longer manages the N1 editorial team, and the new board is reviewing his position, which will be defined in the coming days, N1 reports.
Matić (ANEM): We all have to save N1 together
Veran Matić from ANEM said that N1 works in the public interest and added that he understands today's meeting as support for the public in Serbia.
"You are fighting. You are fighting for the public interest and professionalism and with your practice. The citizens of Serbia should worry and take care of themselves, they will be left without a media that is reliable for informing them. When you are left without reliable media, you will be easily exposed to manipulation and that is a very big problem in Serbia," Matić told N1.
He added that N1 is one of the media outlets that is very professional and that "we all have to preserve together."
"Obviously if you as employees are worried, then we as viewers should be even more worried," Matić said.
Ilić (Peščanik): The hardest blow the regime can give to the rebellion in Serbia
Peščanik columnist Dejan Ilić tells N1 that everything has seemed "like a joke" so far, but that this is currently "the hardest blow the regime can deal to the rebellion in Serbia."
"There is nothing stronger that the regime could do against the rebellion other than something happening to N1 and Nova," Ilić points out.
Ilić believes that "N1 does not have a good future", but says that he "would most like everything to be fine" and that "everyone is worried".
