The Director of the Customs Administration of North Macedonia, Boban Nikolovski, stated that customs officers at the Skopje airport prevented the smuggling of 1,7 kilograms of expensive gold jewelry.
"Customs officers at Skopje International Airport prevented the smuggling of 1,7 kilograms of gold jewelry, which during the criminal proceedings was estimated by a court expert at almost one million euros," Nikolovski said on public broadcaster MTV.
He pointed out that three more attempts at gold smuggling have been discovered at the Skopje airport border crossing in the past two weeks.
"We are monitoring developments and trends in the world and setting appropriate risk profiles. In the past two weeks, three attempts to smuggle gold weighing 285 grams and worth 23.000 euros have been detected at the Skopje International Airport border crossing. The gold has been seized in all cases, and criminal charges have been filed against the suspects," Nikolovski said.
