The Speaker of the Croatian Parliament, Gordan Jandroković, today expressed his respect for the victims of the Jasenovac concentration camp and condemned the Ustasha regime that committed the crimes.

"We showed that we respect the victim, that we sympathize with the families of the murdered, but also condemn the Ustasha regime that committed these crimes," Jandroković told reporters after the commemoration, Croatian Radio and Television reported.

He emphasized that Parliament was the patron of the commemoration this year as well and expressed satisfaction that many MPs from the ruling coalition and the opposition were present at the commemoration.

Independent Democratic Serbian Party MP Milorad Pupovac told reporters that it is important to resist those who insult the memory of the victims of the concentration camps.

"As important as it is not to forget, it is equally important to react, to resist those who do not react, those who belittle and insult the memory of the victims of the Jasenovac concentration camp," Pupovac pointed out.

He expressed satisfaction that there were more people in Jasenovac this year than last.

Today, the 81st anniversary of the breakout of the Ustasha concentration camp from World War II was marked with a memorial column and a commemorative program in Jasenovac.

The commemoration, entitled "Memory for the Future", under the auspices of the Croatian Parliament, was attended by Parliament Speaker Gordan Jandroković, Prime Minister Andrej Plenković, while President Zoran Milanović was represented by his Chief of Staff Orsat Miljenić.
