Future Hungarian Prime Minister Peter Magyar stated after a meeting with the leader of the Alliance of Vojvodina Hungarians (SVM) Balint Pastor that Vojvodina Hungarians will still be able to count on Budapest's support.
"Under the Tisa government, acquired rights will remain intact, and in the course of further strengthening Hungarian-Serbian relations, the primary concern will always be to further ease the position of Hungarians living in Serbia," the Hungarian wrote on Twitter.
But he also stated that at the same time, he made it clear to Pastor that fundamental changes were expected in the transparency and efficiency of the use of resources from the parent company.
"And we will not accept that the Vojvodina Hungarian media, which receive support from the parent company and are controlled by the SVM, serve as a direct channel for Fidesz propaganda," the Hungarian said.
He added that he also told Pastor that the Tisa government would investigate the use of support from the party over the past ten years, but also examine the electoral abuses that occurred in connection with postal voting.
The Hungarian also stated that he gladly accepted the Pastor's invitation to visit his compatriots in Vojvodina.
"According to my plans, I will visit our Hungarian brothers and sisters in Vojvodina at some point during the summer," the Hungarian announced.
What did the Pastor say?
Balint Pastor, leader of the SVM and a long-time ally of outgoing Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, stated that he will continue to cooperate with the new Hungarian government in the interests of the Hungarian community.
The pastor wrote on Instagram that the conversation was open, honest, and gave reason for optimism.
"We agreed that the goal of national policy in the future should be for members of our community to be able to progress in their homeland, to exercise their rights, and for our institutions to function successfully and efficiently," Pastor said.
He also added that they discussed voting by mail.
"I emphasized that the entire process is subject to verification, that we have nothing to hide and that everything was carried out in accordance with the applicable regulations of Hungary and Serbia," he said.
The pastor also wrote that the spending of funds has been checked so far and will continue to be checked in the future.
Peter Magyar and his Tisa party convincingly defeated the incumbent Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban and his Fidesz in the parliamentary elections on April 12th.
SVM and Pastor are long-time allies of Orban and, ahead of the Hungarian elections, they lobbied citizens with dual citizenship in Serbia to vote for Fidesz.
