The leader of the Freedom and Justice Party (SSP), Dragan Đilas, assessed that crime in Serbia today and the connection between the state and criminals are greater than in Colombia, and he blamed the government and Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić for this.
"Therefore, it is realistic to expect that instead of Serbia being called the European Colombia, many will soon start calling Colombia the Serbia of Latin America," Djilas said in a statement.
He added that crime existed before 2012 and that there were the Škaljarci, Kavčani, Šarići and various other criminals, but that "no one negotiated or agreed with them, but the state fought against them and arrested them, and for that they received international recognition and respect."
Djilas also said that "today Serbia has the fourth highest crime rate in Europe" and that "criminals have long since become part of the ruling apparatus."
"For the needs of the authorities, they are beating, threatening, and destroying Savamala, as members of Belivuk's clan can testify. The highest state officials have meetings with them," said Đilas.
"The Sky communication provided by Europol clearly shows the connection between the very top of the state and criminals, but the prosecution and police have not reacted to this for more than five years," added the SSP leader.
Djilas said that the case in which the chief of the Belgrade police is suspected of covering up a murder and removing evidence "shows that the system in Serbia has completely collapsed" and assessed that President Aleksandar Vučić bears the greatest responsibility for the state of affairs in the institutions.
According to him, even more frightening than the event itself is the fact that the police remained silent about everything for two days.
"The Minister of Interior and the Director of the Police are silent and playing dead, and they had to resign on the same day, because they are formally responsible for the situation and personnel policy in the Ministry of Interior. I say formally, because everyone in Serbia knows that all key people in the police and other institutions are appointed by Aleksandar Vučić personally," said Đilas.
He noted that "everyone knows that Vučić is responsible for everything and makes all the decisions, and that therefore he bears the greatest responsibility for both the specific event and the overall situation in the country."
